Beginning in 2026, the Montréal agglomeration will no longer conduct travelling household hazardous waste (HHW) collections. Residents are encouraged to bring their HHW to local ecocentre drop-off locations.
Previously, travelling HHW collections were held twice a year in Westmount, in the spring and in the fall. These events were organised by the City of Montréal, who is responsible for managing the disposal and recycling of hazardous materials across the island. Montréal aims to encourage greater use of permanent drop-off points, such as ecocentres, garages, hardware store and other locations throughout the island, for the collection of HHW.
The City of Westmount is currently exploring the possibility of organising drop-off events for certain non-hazardous items, such as electronics.
Hazardous waste products are those marked as corrosive, flammable or toxic which present safety, health and environmental hazards. These include, paint, swimming pool chemicals, batteries, cleaning products, etc.
Important reminder: Hazardous waste should never be disposed of during regular garbage, recycling or compost collections, or poured down the drain.
Household hazardous waste can be safely disposed of at ecocentres in the Montreal area. Ecocentres are locations that encourage repurposing and recycling. A proof of address on the island of Montreal gives access to dispose of a variety of materials, including hazardous household waste, reusable items, recyclables, green waste, bulky items, construction debris and more.

Additional drop-off locations exist for certain type of hazardous waste: batteries, paint, mercury containing lightbulbs and more.
