Residential Waste Audit Report
In spring 2026, the City carried out a residential waste characterisation audit. By sorting and weighing samples of waste from household garbage bins to analyse their exact composition, the City was able to assess the performance of current waste management programmes and measure the amount of waste sent to landfill.
This exercise demonstrated that two-thirds (⅔) of materials found in household garbage bins could have been diverted from landfill through existing programmes (recycling, composting, and drop-off locations). The analysis highlights the need to raise awareness of waste sorting, encourage participation in composting, and promote the correct disposal of hazardous or recoverable materials.
The audit’s findings will inform adjustments to municipal services and will guide future information campaigns to help the community reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
