In the spring of 2026, the City of Westmount surveyed residents to better understand their experience of biweekly trash collection. The survey results are now available.
The survey, which was conducted among residents of single-family homes and buildings with eight units or less, took place from March 30 to April 30, 2026. Waste ambassadors from Enuf (a B Corp-certified company) assisted with collecting survey responses door-to-door, and Segma Recherche was commissioned by the City to analyse the data.
The results indicate that 47.3% of residents reported mild to significant difficulties with the new collection frequency, while 51.1% experienced little or no difficulty adapting.
Among residents who encountered difficulties, the main issues raised concerned odours, lack of storage space, missed collections, and the presence of rodents or insects. The materials most often associated with these problems were food scraps, packaging, containers, paper, and animal waste.
Conversely, respondents who experienced little or no difficulty adapting indicated that a clear understanding of sorting guidelines, participation in recyclable and compostable waste collections, and sufficient storage space were key factors.
The data collected will guide the City’s Environment Division’s initiatives, particularly in developing awareness campaigns and optimising collection services.
