Heatwave and Watering Guidelines—Let’s be Environmentally Responsible!

During a heatwave, grass naturally goes dormant: it turns yellow, but this is not a sign that it’s dead. There’s no need to overwater it, as it rests to conserve water and will green up again once the rain returns.

Eco-responsible habits:

  • Water early in the morning or late in the evening to limit evaporation.
  • Water your plants deeply less often, focusing on roots and not mere surface dampening.
  • Choose climate-appropriate or native plants, they need far less water.
  • Mow at a height of 6 to 8 cm to conserve moisture and resist drought.
  • Use rainwater harvesting barrels instead of drinking water; they are subsidized.
  • Practice grasscycling by leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing to retain moisture and fertilize the soil.
  •  Aerate the soil for better water infiltration and gas exchange, promoting deep rooting.

Let’s all do our part to protect our precious water supply, especially during heatwaves. A dormant lawn is not a failed lawn, but a smart, sustainable one!
