Green Patrol Report: Summer 2025

Two employees of the Green Patrol

For several years now, the City has deployed a summer Green Patrol to conduct visual inspections of the surface contents of waste bins

Here are the findings for summer 2025:

  • The main contaminants found in blue recycling bins are items that don’t fall under the accepted categories of containers, packaging, and printed materials such as toys, utensils, hangers, as well as protective polystyrene and textiles.
  • For food waste collection (green bins), the participation rate reached 40%. Surface contamination was observed at 11%, mainly due to non-compostable plastic bags (regular and oxo-biodegradable), dog waste bags, and recyclable materials.
  • Household garbage bins showed the highest level of contamination, with recyclable materials, food waste, yard waste, and even furniture commonly found.

These results highlight the importance of proper waste sorting at the source. Better sorting increases the chances of successful recovery and reduces the effort required at sorting, recycling, and composting facilities and helps to lower our overall environmental impact!
