City Programmes Supporting Eco-Responsible Habits

Get inspired by the City’s programmes and services to adopt eco-responsible habits in 2026. The Environment team is sharing its best tips to help you get started!

Incorporate Composting into Your Daily Routine

The City offers a range of resources to help you adopt the green food waste bin, including collection services, compost bins provided for all, and helpful tips.

Tips:

  • New to composting? Developing the habit gradually can be a winning approach. For example, start by collecting common, odour-free materials such as vegetable peels, tissues, and nut shells.
  • Composting expert?  Good habits can extend beyond the kitchen. Using small compost bins in the office or bathroom allows you to collect items such as tissues, cotton swabs, and makeup remover pads.

Adapting Shopping Habits by Taking Advantage of the Green Grants Programme

Through the Green Grants Programme, the City reimburses residents for sustainable purchases. Eligible items include washable diapers and personal hygiene products, reusable products, water-saving plumbing fixtures, and much more.

Tip:

  • Choose repair over buying new! Repair costs for many household items, including clothing, footwear, household appliances, and other goods, are covered at 50% through the programme, up to a maximum of $100.

Choose Active Transportation

The Green Grants programme also covers the purchase of bicycles, scooters, and longboards. Choosing active modes of transportation is not only beneficial for personal health, but also contributes to a healthier environment.

Tip:

  • A BIXI bike-share membership is ideal for those who want to cycle without owning a bike. In addition, 60% of the cost of seasonal and monthly (minimum 2 months) memberships are covered through the Green Grants Programme.

Master Waste Sorting

The interactive “Ça va où ? ” (in french) tool helps residents properly sort hundreds of items. Discover this tool, along with other resources, on the City of Westmount’s Collection Services page.

Tips:

  • Residents are invited to use the small-item recovery islandlocated at the Westmount Recreation Centre, to recycle certain small items that are not accepted in curbside recycling collection.
  • Reusing items already in circulation, such as gift bags and boxes, repurposing T-shirts into cleaning cloths, or using toothbrushes to clean hard-to-reach areas, is a complementary approach to waste reduction and helps limit the spread of single-use items.
