2024 Waste Management Report

Waste collection truck on a summer day

The City of Westmount has set clear goals: to reduce the amount of waste produced, increase the recovery rate of materials, and boost composting participation. To achieve these objectives, significant changes were implemented on May 1, 2024.

These changes included:

  • Streetside or accessible lane collection
  • Mandatory food waste collection for buildings with 9 to 29 dwelling units
  • Bi-weekly garbage collection, from October to April, for single-family homes and buildings with 2 to 8 dwelling units

A year later, the results of these initiatives are encouraging. We have seen a reduction in missed collections, a decrease in landfilled waste, increased participation in food waste collection, and a reduction in collection truck emissions.

Despite this success, it is crucial that we all continue to change our daily habits to help the City meet its waste reduction targets. The 3RV-E hierarchy (reduce at the source, reuse, recycle, recovery and disposal as a last resort) is an excellent guide to direct our actions.

Remember: The best waste is the one we don't produce!
