Extreme Cold Weather: measures to prevent network outages

Hydro Westmount logo

Due to the extreme cold weather forecast for the coming days (especially the coming nights), Hydro Westmount's distribution network is currently reaching a critical overload threshold.

The stability of the electrical service is threatened by peak consumption. Without an immediate reduction in overall demand, the risk of service interruptions and sector-wide outages is very high.

To protect the grid and maintain service, please follow these guidelines:

  • Heating: Lower the temperature in your home by 1 to 2 degrees. It is also recommended that you turn down the heating in unoccupied rooms.
  • Electric vehicles: Avoid charging between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Heated private driveways and walkways: Do not activate them during peak hours (6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
  • Hot water: Reduce hot water consumption to a minimum.
  • High-consumption appliances: Postpone the use of washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
  • Heating elements: Do not use any electrical appliances with heating elements during peak hours (6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
  • Unused appliances: Turn off unnecessary electronic devices and lighting.

The cooperation of everyone is essential to prevent a network failure during this period of extreme cold.
