Extreme Cold: Reduce energy consumption and stay safe

Outdoor power lines

A period of extreme cold is forecast for the weekend of January 23-25. Keep warm with tips for your safety and protecting the energy grid.

Be Energy-Wise

Hydro Westmount's network is subject to high demand during periods of extreme cold. This high demand can lead to circuit overloads and power interruptions. The City of Westmount also incurs heavy penalties during periods of high electricity consumption

For all these reasons, when the temperature reaches -18°C, Hydro Westmount asks its customers to reduce their electrical energy consumption during peak hours: Monday to Friday, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

We recommend that you use your appliances outside these peak hours, especially those that consume a lot of hot water, such as washing machines and dishwashers.

Keep Warm

Extremely cold temperatures can be hazardous for your heath and safety. Without adequate protection, cold exposure can lead to injuries such as frostbite or hypothermia. Effects of cold weather can also reduce the effectiveness of de-icing efforts on roads and sidewalks. Prepare for the cold and keep in mind these safety tips:

  • Limit your outings: If you must go out in the cold, remember to keep moving and seek shelter often. Include stops at public buildings, such as the Library or Westmount Recreation Centre, to warm up along your route.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear layers of warm clothing and avoid exposing your bare skin to the elements. Frostbite can happen in a matter of minutes! Also, ensure you have adequate footwear to keep your feet warm and dry, and consider using ice cleats for safety when walking outside.
