500 Students Learn the Power of Proper Waste Sorting

School workshops in a Westmount class

Last month, nearly 500 students across Westmount schools took part in interactive workshops designed to spark curiosity and build lasting habits around responsible waste sorting—an initiative led by the City’s Environment Division.

These workshops, part of Westmount’s eco-responsible commitment, raised awareness among young people about the importance of sorting materials by showing them how good practices can help reduce landfill waste and improve recycling, both at school and at home.

Designed by the Environment Division and delivered by Héritage Saint-Bernard, the workshops brought the journey of waste to life. Students explored what happens to materials after collection, learned the specifics of Westmount’s sorting system, and put their knowledge to the test through a hands-on sorting game. The engaging format made complex topics accessible and meaningful, reinforcing the tangible impact of everyday actions.

This initiative was warmly received by school staff and has already inspired conversations around establishing green committees and expanding recycling streams within schools.

The Environment Division extends its sincere thanks to the school teams who helped bring this initiative to life, and to Héritage Saint-Bernard for their collaboration in fostering environmental awareness among Westmount’s youth.

Did you know? Many small items, often destined for landfill, can be dropped off at the recovery island at the Westmount Recreation Centre.
