Ville de Montréal Announces New Public Safety Measures
On August 21, 2026, the City of Montréal announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening public safety and supporting the work of the Montréal Police Service (SPVM), which serves Westmount. These initiatives are expected to benefit Westmount residents by enhancing police transparency, accountability, and community confidence.
The measures announced by Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada's administration include, most notably:
- the launch of a process to introduce body-worn cameras within the SPVM and the creation of a voluntary registry of privately owned security cameras;
- a mandate for the Public Safety Commission to gather feedback on the guidelines governing police stops.
Given the impact that demonstrations and occasional acts of vandalism have had on daily life in Westmount in recent years, the City welcomes measures that support public safety while strengthening public trust in policing.
