Pedestrian Safety Month

Three pedestrians at a crosswalk

October is Pedestrian Safety Month! As our Public Safety teams ramp up awareness initiatives in school zones around Westmount, we remind everyone to adopt safe habits on our roads.

Every year, October is one of the months with the highest number of road accidents involving pedestrians. On average, from 2020 to 2024, 66 pedestrians died annually on Quebec roads, according to the SAAQ

Whether you are walking or driving, everyone must do their part. Following the rules, being courteous, and sharing the road are essential for safer streets. For example, pedestrians must:

  • cross at an intersection or crosswalk when one is nearby;
  • walk on the sidewalk when there is one;
  • adopt behaviours that promote their safety, such as making eye contact with the driver before crossing and avoiding crossing between parked vehicles.

For their part, drivers of road vehicles must, among other things:

  • give pedestrians the right of way at crosswalks;
  • slow down when approaching a cyclist or pedestrian;
  • ensure that they can maintain a reasonable distance between these users and their vehicle (1 m on roads where the posted speed limit is 50 km/h or less and 1.5 m on roads where the posted speed limit is over 50 km/h).
