Home Security: What You Can Do Each Day

Safety begins with a few simple steps every day!

The City would like to remind all residents of a few simple but effective habits to help protect their homes and prevent break-ins. These everyday actions can make a real difference in keeping their households safe.

Here are some practical tips:

  • Lock all doors and windows even when you're at home.
  • Lock your vehicle and keep any valuables out of sight.
  •  Keep keys, wallets, and handbags away from the front door.
  • Avoid hiding spare keys in obvious places.
  • Consider using a protective case (Faraday) to block car key signals.
  • Store valuable items and important documents in a safe, hidden location.
  • Close your curtains or blinds in the evening.
  • Install motion-activated or timer lights.
  • Make sure your basement windows are secure and lockable.
  • Trim hedges or shrubs near your home to maintain clear visibility.
  • Each night, check that all doors and windows are locked including your car.
  • Lock garden gates or any other access points to the rear of your property.
  • Don't leave ladders lying around outside.
  • If you're working in the garden, keep doors and windows locked and valuables out of sight.
  • In flats or apartment buildings, never let strangers into the building.
  • Installing alarms can help detect intruders and enhance security, while doorbell cameras can provide useful video evidence.
  • Record serial numbers of electronics and photograph your valuable items.
  • Get to know your neighbours; they can help you spot anything unusual.
  • If you're away for an extended period, register with our Public Safety for home checks.
