The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

On December 6, the City observes the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day is an opportunity to remember the tragic events that occurred at the École Polytechnique and to raise public awareness about the fight against gender-based violence.

On December 6, 1989, 14 young women were murdered at the École Polytechnique in Montreal. Each year, commemorative activities marking this tragic event highlight the need to continue efforts to end all forms of gender-based violence.

Women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals continue are particularly at risk of gender-based violence in Canada and around the world. The City encourages awareness of this issue. According to Women and Gender Equality Canada:

  • 44% of Canadian women and girls aged 15 and older report experiencing psychological, physical, or sexual abuse in their lifetime.
  • People with disabilities face double the risk of gender-based violence, which may include acts such as withholding mobility aids, medication or essential support.

Creating safe environments and community support are essential to recognizing gender-based violence and taking action to prevent and combat it.
