Impacts of Montréal Water Main Work on Westmount

The City of Westmount is aligning with the Ville de Montréal’s directives to support the regional effort to reduce peak drinking water demand and relieve pressure on the water supply system while the McTavish supply corridor is operating with reduced redundancy.

Measures for Residents and Businesses

As in most of the Agglomeration, Westmount residents are strongly encouraged to adopt water-saving practices. Residents are asked to reduce their non-essential use of drinking water.

Examples of Recommended Measures for Residents and Businesses:

  • Reduce lawn watering and landscape irrigation;
  • Postpone, when possible, filling or topping up swimming pools;
  • Limit the use of drinkable water for washing driveways, vehicles and outdoor surfaces.

Westmount offers a Green Grants Programme that provides financial assistance for a variety of water-saving products, including rain barrels, plumbing efficiency kits, and other environmentally beneficial initiatives.

Measures in the City of Westmount

Accordingly, the City will implement the following measures until the request to reduce drinking water consumption is lifted:

  • Municipal watering (parks and horticulture) will be adjusted according to weather conditions;
  • Emergency water main repairs will be prioritized when they occur;
  • Preventive sewer flushing will be suspended during the high-demand period;
  • The operating schedules of the City’s water parks (Westmount, Stayner, and Prince Albert Parks) will be coordinated with the Agglomeration’s approach;
  • The fountain in Argyle Park and the one in Greene Square will be temporarily shut down;
  • The continuous refilling of the King George Park pond will be suspended, and its maintenance (cleaning and/or draining) will be adjusted as needed;
  • The refilling of the Westmount Park pond will be suspended.

Please note:

  • No immediate restrictions apply to essential uses such as drinking water and personal hygiene;
  • Lower water pressure may occur during peak demand periods.

If conditions deteriorate, the agglomeration may impose mandatory restrictions and enforcement measures. Temporary service disruptions may also occur.
