Major Ice Storm Forecast: Safety preparations

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Montreal Island area from Wednesday, March 11 to Thursday, March 12, due to the risk of a prolonged period of freezing rain.

Precipitation is expected to begin early Wednesday morning, between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., continuing steadily throughout the day, and ending early Thursday morning. Forecasts indicate potential ice accumulations of 10 to 20 mm. With no significant thaw expected on Thursday and Friday, icy conditions may persist on surfaces. Winds of around 20 km/h, with gusts up to 50 km/h, are also expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

City Preparations

City teams are monitoring the situation closely and preparing to respond if needed.

  • Hydro Westmount crews are monitoring the electrical network and will be ready to respond in the event of power outages.
  • Municipal services are prepared to help maintain safe conditions for essential travel.
  • Public Works teams will intervene as required to treat streets and sidewalks and maintain the safest possible conditions.
Due to freezing rain and the weather conditions forecast for March 11 and 12, the recycling collection scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 2026, is cancelled and postponed to Friday, March 13, 2026, for the entire territory of the City of Westmount.

Despite these preparations, freezing rain events can create difficult and unpredictable conditions, particularly due to ice accumulation on trees and infrastructure.

Travel and Safety

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel during the freezing rain event.

Hazardous conditions may include:

  • very slippery roads and sidewalks;
  • falling tree branches;
  • possible power outages.

For safety reasons, residents are also advised to avoid wooded areas, including Summit Woods, during and shortly after the ice storm.

Prepare for Possible Power Outages

Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential power outages.

It is recommended to keep an emergency kit at home that allows your household to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours, including items such as:

  • drinking water
  • non-perishable food
  • flashlights and extra batteries
  • a battery-powered radio
  • essential medications
