Moving: Tips and best practices

In preparation for a move, advance planning is recommended to facilitate the transition to a new residence and reduce environmental and logistical impacts.

Sustainable practices

Take this opportunity to sort through your belongings, reduce the volume to be moved, and plan how you will pack and organize your items.

For a more sustainable move:

  • Moving bin rental services such as GoBac offer a reusable alternative to cardboard boxes.
  • For fragile items, you can also use everyday materials such as old newspapers, egg cartons, blankets, and towels.
  • Reusable items such as bags, containers, dishware, or refillable bottles are encouraged whenever possible.
  • If possible, use a moving truck that is appropriately sized for your belongings to reduce the number of trips required.
  • If you are unsure how to sort materials, consult the “Ça va où?”(in French) application from Recyc-Québec.
For bulky items (such as wood or ceramics), the City of Westmount offers a bulky-item collection by registration on the first Tuesday of each month

You can also bring items to the Côte-des-Neiges or LaSalle Ecocentres, where a wide range of materials and objects can be properly recycled.
