Yield Streets: Murray Hill and Mountain
As part of the ongoing 2026 reconstruction projects, Murray Hill and Mountain avenues will be the very first roads officially converted into two-way yield streets in Westmount.
What is a yield street?
A yield street is a traffic-calming configuration designed for narrow two-way roads where space does not comfortably allow two cars to pass side by side. Instead of widening the road, one direction of travel is assigned priority using official signage. Vehicles travelling in the yielding direction must slow down, check for oncoming traffic, and wait, if necessary, before proceeding.
Why Murray Hill and Mountain Avenues?
These two corridors were selected due to their unique topography and the opportunity provided by their street reconstruction:
- Managing incline safety: On steep slopes like Murray Hill and Mountain, giving priority to northbound (uphill) traffic allows vehicles to maintain necessary momentum. Requiring southbound (downhill) drivers to yield forces traffic moving downhill—which naturally picks up speed—to slow down and navigate the section with extra caution.
- Prioritising pedestrians: Keeping the roadway narrow allows the City to widen sidewalks and add streetscape landscaping, creating a safer environment for pedestrians.
