By-law 1625 Comes Into Effect: Strengthening tree protection

Tree during the summer

The City of Westmount has adopted by-law 1625, which amends certain provisions of the zoning by-law concerning the planting and protection of trees, as well as vegetated surfaces in side yards. This regulation aims to strengthen the preservation of trees and vegetated areas in side yards and to more strictly regulate activities that may affect them.

The main changes introduced by this by-law are as follows:

  • Modification for tree removal: Tree removal will only be permitted under specific circumstances.

  • Mandatory replacement of removed trees: Any removed tree must be replaced, except in certain exceptional cases provided for in the regulation.

  • Protection of trees during construction: During construction work, protective measures—including the installation of temporary fencing around trees near the work site—will be required to prevent damage.

  • Prohibition of certain species: Some tree species deemed problematic are now prohibited from being planted within the City’s territory, in order to preserve local biodiversity and maintain healthy green spaces.
