The members of Westmount City Council join me in expressing our profound sadness following the antisemitic attack that occurred on December 14, 2025, during a public Chanukah celebration in Sydney, Australia. Innocent people were targeted simply because they had gathered to mark this important holiday for the Jewish community.
Chanukah is a celebration of light, resilience, and continuity. An attack on a peaceful gathering dedicated to religious tradition and identity constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental right to live openly and without fear.
Westmount is home to a vibrant, engaged Jewish community that has been present for many generations. We express our full solidarity with those affected, their loved ones, and the Jewish community, both here and elsewhere around the world.
We unequivocally condemn antisemitism, as well as all forms of hatred and violence. We reaffirm our firm political commitment to inclusion, mutual respect, and the protection of all people.
We extend our sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by these events.
The City of Westmount’s Chanukah celebration will take place as planned this evening at City Hall, in the Council Chamber, at 5 p.m., and will be held in a secure setting.
As a preventive measure, enhanced security measures are being implemented across the territory of Westmount, in collaboration with Westmount Public Safety and the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).
