The Trump administration’s threat to impose additional tariffs on certain Canadian products is raising legitimate concerns among our local businesses, merchants and residents.
Today’s announcement of a 30-day delay before the imposition of these tariffs is certainly a positive sign, but it’s only a temporary relief. Our concerns remain.
Cities would be on the front line if this threat were carried out. These tariffs could have a significant impact on material prices and construction costs, which have already far exceeded inflation rates. These could exacerbate the difficulties associated with managing the infrastructure debt that so many cities are trying to manage. The repercussions of a trade war would be felt by all Canadians and all communities.
We fully support the efforts of the federal and provincial governments to address this situation.
As always, I continue to work closely with our representative in the House of Commons, Anna Gainey, and our representative in the Quebec National Assembly, Jennifer Maccarone, to support our community.
Let’s remain united. Together, we can build a prosperous and sustainable future for all of us!
