McEntyre Creative Writing Competition

Poster for the 2026 McEntyre writing competition
In summary
  • Deadline: March 22, 2026

In 2026, the McEntyre Creative Writing Competition theme is Finding Yourself.

Peter McEntyre, a former mayor of Westmount (1969-1971), started this competition to encourage creative writing and foster community spirit.

We invite you to write about how, when, or where you, or a fictional character, might find one’s true self. You can do this through a story, a poem, or an essay, but always keeping in mind the idea of community.

Who can participate?

All students in elementary (grades 1-6) or high school (secondary 1-5) who go to school in Westmount, live in Westmount, or are members of a library in Westmount, are eligible to participate.

How do I enter?

Students in grades 1 and 2 are asked to submit their handwritten entries on paper. Because the Westmount Library is closed until after the McEntyre deadline, submissions can be dropped off at Victoria Hall. Their offices are open Monday – Friday 8:30 – 4:30 p.m. If you need to make other arrangements, please email the Children’s Librarian at wwayling@westmount.orgLearn more
  • Fill the McEntyre form and submit your entry at the Library or online.
  • Entries must be received by midnight on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
