Wheeled Blue Bins for Recycling Materials Now Available for Everyone

The City of Westmount is moving forward with modernized selective collection, a provincial initiative, by distributing blue wheeled 360-litre bins for recyclable materials. Request your wheeled bin via the Citizen Portal to receive it in 2025.

Important message: For everyone’s safety, it is essential to be patient on the road and not to bypass the trucks and collection staff.

How to properly use the wheeled bin

  • Place the bin on your property, at the side of the street or accessible lane, without overstepping on the public domain (street, sidewalk or bike path), by 7 a.m. on collection day.
  • Close the bin to protect materials from the elements. In winter, remove snow from the lid and position the bin in a visible and easily accessible location, ensuring it does not interfere with snow removal operations.
  • Outside the collection period, store the bin so that it is not visible from the street.

The wheeled bin is public property: it must not be altered, painted or used for any other purpose, and it must remain at your address if you move. However, you may write your address on it.

Advantages of the 360-litre wheeled bin

Compared to the small, open blue bins, the new 360-litre blue rolling bins better protect recyclable materials from the elements, facilitate the work of collection and sorting centre employees and contribute to keeping the City clean. Furthermore, a 360-litre bin can hold more than 5 times as much material as a small bin, so it doesn’t have to be put out for collection every week. We encourage you to only put your bin out when it is full. This will reduce the amount of bins that are out for collection each week, making for a more efficient collection process and trucks spending less time on the road. The use of bags is not recommended as it encourages the production of plastic, thus creating more material to be recycled, in addition to the bags having to be opened one by one at the sorting Centre.

What to do with your old blue bin?

The City will not take back your old small blue bin, but encourages you to reuse it. Give it a new use. Use it to carry your recyclables to the wheeled bin, or to store various items at home. If it’s broken and unusable, you can dispose of it during the recyclable materials collection.

Modernization of selective collection as of January 1, 2025

As of January 1, 2025, Éco Entreprise Québec (ÉEQ) will become responsible for the selective collection system for the whole of Quebec, and will manage the modernization of the collection and processing system for recyclable materials. The list of accepted materials will be simplified: containers, packaging, printed matter—that’s it!

ÉEQ has launched the Bin Impact initiative to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of sorting recyclable materials at the source, and to put an end to grey areas when it comes to determining what does and doesn’t go in the recycling bin.
