Urban Wildlife: What to do in the presence of a wild turkey?
Wild turkeys are being spotted more regularly in Westmount. Adopt these habits to coexist peacefully with these animals who generally pose no threat:
- Do not approach. If necessary, scare the animal and encourage it to move away by making noise, or using an umbrella or stick, without hitting them.
- Do not feed. Reduce access to food by ensuring your waste bins are tightly closed, fencing in vegetable gardens and edible plants, and using bird feeder designs that prevent seeds from being scattered on the ground. Frequently clean the ground under bird feeders, or remove them temporarily if a turkey often visits your property.
