Summer Jobs

You will find below a list of the positions that we anticipate will be available during the summer of 2020. We would ask you to choose only one or two positions that you are qualified for and interested in, as well as the approximate date when you will be available to start working.

SUMMER STUDENT HIRING POLICY

  • Summer students will be chosen based on their qualifications, experience and availability.
  • All candidates must pursue full-time studies and apply by January 31, 2020.

Candidates will be selected according to the following order of priority:

  1. Students who worked for the City for a minimum of eight (8) weeks in 2019 and performed satisfactorily.
  2. Students who are Westmount residents.
  3. Students who are non-Westmount residents.
  4. Students who have applied after January 31, 2020.

N.B.: Prior to being hired, students must:

  • provide proof that they are studying full time and that they will be returning to full-time studies in the fall of 2020.
  • provide their social insurance number.

The positions will be awarded to candidates with the appropriate qualifications and experience and only those selected will be interviewed.

The Human Resources Department is currently using a new system to manage applications for jobs offered by the City of Westmount. For a better experience, use a computer.

Please note that the hourly rates for 2020 will not be available until a later date.

Blue-Collar Students

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), basic knowledge; skills in using a paintbrush; doing simple cleaning; have manual dexterity. Required mid-May to end of August.

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), knowledge of maintenance and cleaning methods; cleaning products; playgrounds; skills in communicating with the public; using simple household appliances; maintaining order and enforcing rules of the tennis courts; being tactful and courteous. Required mid-May to mid-September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), basic knowledge of maintenance and cleaning methods; knowledge of products used for cleaning, capacity in dealing with the public with tact and courtesy; to use simple household appliances. Must be available for the whole summer, from mid-May to end of August.

Qualifications: be enrolled in a DVS in automobile mechanics and diesel full time prior to the summer period; bilingual (French and English), basic knowledge of techniques, practices and tools used in the trade or occupation; work safety measures; use the necessary tools to work; consult parts catalogs; understand the maintenance manuals and draft, if necessary, requests for materials; demonstrate team work and versatility. Must be available from mid-May to late August.

 

White-Collar Students

Day Camp

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), mature, ability to organize and plan activities and to manage employee teams, ability to work with children, background in all team and individual sports, arts and crafts, theatre, music and science. Recreation or physical education students or relevant experience required. Required mid-June to mid-August. Must have been Camp Monitor for at least one (1) full summer.

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), mature, ability to work with children, background in all team and individual sports, arts and crafts, theatre, music and science. Recreation or physical education students or relevant experience required. Required mid-June to end of August.

Tennis

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), must have basic knowledge of tennis rules and ability to work with the public. Responsible for managing court reservations when required, monitor the installations and maintain order. Required mid-May to end of September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Pool

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard (NLS). Required mid-May to mid-September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), National Lifeguard and/or Red Cross Instructor or equivalent. Must have two years of previous relevant experience. Required mid-May to mid-September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), National Lifeguard (NLS), Red Cross Instructor’s, LifeSaving Instructors, Standard First Aid Training and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Swimming Pool Operator’s. Lifeguarding/instructing experience. Managerial experience preferable. Required mid-May to mid-September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), National Lifeguard (NLS), Red Cross Instructor’s, LifeSaving instructors, Standard First Aid Training and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Swimming Pool Operator’s. Lifeguarding/instructing experience. Administering pool event and programs. Required mid-May to mid-September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), mature, ability to work with the public. Responsible for a cash float, selling pool and tennis passes as well as the cleaning of the locker rooms. Required mid-June to mid-September (must be willing to work days, evenings & weekends).

Public Works

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), Second or third year student in a recognized horticultural school. Must oversees the work of landscape maintenance subcontractors, through inspections and onsite visits. Knowledge of arboriculture and horticulture terms and methods and knowledge of the Pesticides Act and the Pesticides Management Code as they relate to the urban environment. Required during days from mid-May to end of August.

Public Security

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), minimum one year completed in police training and First aid and CPR certification. Must provide a continual presence in the parks of the City and must be able to be tactful with the public. Required mid-May to end of August, following a rotation system of two schedules (days and evenings) including weekends.

Qualifications: bilingual (French and English), minimum one year completed in fire safety training or have a fire safety officer certificate. Must inspect residential smoke detectors in the City and provide information. Must be able to write reports and have a sense of judgment, tact, and courtesy. Required during days from mid-May to end of August.
