Yesterday’s events in Beirut, Lebanon, affected us all. We are deeply saddened by the magnitude of this tragedy that has struck the Land of the Cedars. I would like to express my deep solidarity with the Lebanese community in our City and around the world. To honour the memory of the victims and all those who were affected by this tragedy, the flags at City Hall and the Westmount Public Library will be flown at half-mast today, Wednesday, August 5.
We invite all Westmounters who are able to do so to make a donation to the Red Cross in support of the Lebanese people.
Christina M. Smith
Mayor of Westmount
As a Westmounter of Lebanese heritage, the tragedy that took place in Beirut yesterday particularly touched me. I would like to pay tribute to the memory of all the victims, and my heart goes out to the survivors, the wounded, the families of the victims and all the Lebanese people. The people of Lebanon are resilient and strong, and I am confident that, as always, they will recover from this terrible ordeal.
