WRC ice rinks closed – December 9 to January 3

An inspection by the City’s Engineering Department has revealed significant signs of deterioration in the cooling tower of the refrigeration system for the two indoor rinks at the Westmount Recreation Centre (WRC).

To prevent one or more refrigeration system components from breaking down and falling out of service, the City will replace the cooling tower. The work will take place from Monday, December 9, 2024, to Friday, January 3, 2025, inclusive. Both skating rinks at the WRC will be closed to the public during the work. However, the building will remain open for scheduled activities off the ice and the Mouton Noir Café will operate on its regular schedule.

The timing of the work was determined based on the urgency of the repairs, the public tendering process, and the City’s desire to minimize the impact of the work on scheduled activities at the WRC. Please note that the entirety of the WRC is closed on December 25 and January 1.

The public will still be able to enjoy the outdoor natural ice rinks this winter at Stayner, Prince Albert, King George, and Devon Parks, as well as at Queen Elizabeth Gardens, weather permitting. A new natural ice rink will also be set up in the splash pad area at the northeast corner of Westmount Park. The City is also looking into the possibility of offering other options for skating activities.
