Deposit of draft by-law 1625 for the protection of trees

At a regular meeting held on 3 February 2025, Council deposited draft amendment by-law 1625 entitled : By-law to amend certain provisions of the Zoning By-law concerning the planting and protection of trees and planted areas in side yards. The purpose of the by-law is not only to strengthen tree protection but also to promote more sustainable tree management in the City of Westmount.

The main objectives of these amendments are as follows:

  • Strengthen regulations on tree felling
  • Introduce new tree-planting provisions, making it mandatory to plant a tree for every tree felled, unless specific exceptions apply
  • Ensure the protection of trees during construction work

In parallel with these amendments, a draft by-law amending the fines for breaching a regulatory provision, particularly in the case of felling a tree, was also adopted. Draft by-law 1626 entitled: By-law to amend various planning by-laws in order to modify the amount of fines is intended to bring local fines into line with those provided for in the Act respecting land use planning and development.

Consult draft by-law 1625 and draft by-law 1626 for more details.

Anyone wishing to find out more about draft by-law 1625 is invited to attend the public meeting to be held on February 25 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall (4333 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest).
