The Gouvernement du Québec recently announced that they would be financially supporting municipalities across the province to offset their loss of revenue and increased costs due to COVID-19. The provincial government will be allocating $800M to cities across Quebec. Westmount will receive $4.2M; the first payment will be in December 2020 and the second in March 2021. These funds will help Westmount balance its municipal budget.
Quebec’s contribution is based on population and is to offset revenue losses incurred in areas such as parking and programming. The City also had increased costs due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. An impact felt through the choice to open our facilities and programmes with increased safety protocols instructed by Public Health. Our goal has always been to provide all the services possible to Westmount residents in the safest way possible.
The City will include the $4.2M to its 2020 operating budget. The 2021 operating budget will be tabled in December 2020, and we aim not to increase taxes beyond the level of inflation for the Westmount portion of your tax bill.
The past eight months have been incredibly challenging for everyone, and you have our commitment that we will continue to provide the best possible services and to always put the health and safety of our residents at the heart of our decision making.
Christina M. Smith
Mayor of Westmount
