Message from the Mayor on International Women’s Day
On March 7, 2024, a gathering was hosted at City Hall to mark International Women’s Day with a “Pink Tea” event. This event also marked the opening of the “Women Are Persons!” exhibit which is currently on display in Westmount as part of a national tour. At the event, Mayor Christina M. Smith expressed:
“By holding this event today, we are, in a way, continuing a tradition that started at the beginning of the century, as a few brave women found this subversive way to gather and discuss various issues of importance, such as gender equality and women’s rights.
We are very grateful to these pioneers who have paved the way and inspired many women in the country and all over the world. I am very proud to say that here, in Westmount, we women are well represented in all levels of government: the Honourable Jennifer Maccarone represents our community at the Quebec National Assembly and the Honourable Anna Gainey at the House of Commons. Also, more than half of our own city council are women.
We have come a long way, but there is still much to do. Pay equity, violence against women, and justice for native and First Nations women are just a few examples of issues that we need to continue to advocate for and fight for.
We still need brave women like the Famous 5.”
Visit the exhibit by the Famous 5 Foundation at Westmount City Hall until May 15 and be inspired by Canadian women who left their mark on our history. You just may cross paths with inspiring women of today who commit themselves daily to the strength and betterment of our community.
