Guide concerning the use of motorized mobility aids (MMAs)
On August 9, 2020, a ministerial order from the Gouvernement du Québec came to effect to regulate the use of motorized mobility aids (MMAs) on public roads and sidewalks.
It is essential that any person using an MMA on the public way be aware of these regulations, particularly in terms of how an MMA is defined, of which rules of the road apply to them, and of the minimum equipment requirements. Motorized Mobility Aids (MMAs) are appliances designed to compensate for an inability to walk. They include electric wheelchairs, as well as 3-wheel and 4-wheel motorized scooters.
In summary :
- A person using an MMA is allowed to travel on sidewalks, on bicycle lanes and, under certain conditions, on a roadway or its shoulder.
- Some modifications have been made to the definition of an MMA, to traffic rules and to mandatory equipment requirements.
- In the event of a violation, the penalties provided for in the Highway Safety Code, in the event of non-compliance with a rule, will apply.
- This order is the result of a pilot project headed by the Ministry of Transport which was carried out between June 2015 and June 2020.
