Freedom of the city ceremony – 2nd field regiment, RCA – Saturday, October 24, 2015
Saturday, October 24, 2015, 1 p.m., Westmount City Hall
The City of Westmount will confer upon the 2nd Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery the honour of Freedom of the City in a special ceremony outside City Hall on Saturday, October 24th. Following a brief traditional protocol, the regiment will proceed with a parade westbound on Sherbrooke Street to Victoria Hall.
The granting of Freedom of the City by a municipality is one of most valued honours bestowed upon a Canadian Armed Forces unit or cadet corps. The Westmount Council resolution, adopted October 5, 2015, confers upon the 2nd Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery “the title, privilege, honour and distinction of marching through the streets of the City of Westmount on all ceremonial occasions with bayonets fixed, colours flying and bands playing”.
The Regiment, formed in 1855 and based at the Côte-des-Neiges Armoury, has had ties to the City of Westmount for more than a century. Two other regiments – the Royal Montreal Regiment and the 34 Signal Regiment (34 Canadian Brigade Group) – have been granted Freedom of the City by Westmount.
