Green Grants

The City of Westmount offers a number of grants for your sustainable purchases. Residents who purchase eligible products and meet the general conditions may request a refund during the same calendar year by submitting the online form and providing supporting documents. A maximum of two (2) grant applications are accepted per address, or per occupancy unit, per year.

General conditions

Westmount residents who purchase eligible products can apply for a subsidy, under the following general conditions:

  • applicants must provide proof of residency in Westmount;
  • purchases must be made online or from a registered business during the current year;
  • the minimum purchase amount is $20 after taxes, per request (excluding additional costs such as shipping);
  • products must be used or installed at the address associated with the request.

Grants offered by the City

Electric kick scooters and bicycles are sustainable modes of transportation that also contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

Eligible products

  • bicycles for adults or children: hybrid, road, urban, touring, with electric assistance, or electric
  • electric kick scooters
  • kickstands
  • helmets
  • padlocks
  • lights or reflectors
  • floor, foot or portable c02 pumps
  • bottle holders
  • luggage racks
  • bicycle bags
  • bicycle trailers
  • baby seats
  • portable puncture repair kits

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • bikes and accessories for mountain bikes, gravel bikes, fat bikes, BMX bikes, or tandem bikes
  • reflective strips

  • 50% up to a total reimbursement of $100, for a minimum reimbursement amount of $20 after taxes

Domestic composters allow you to produce a natural fertilizer, compost, which can be used to nourish the soil and plants, while reducing the quantity of organic waste (food and garden waste) sent to landfill.

Eligible products

  • worm composting bin (vermicomposting)
  • wood or plastic home composting device

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • the purchase of worms
  • the purchase of materials or accessories for the fabrication, repair or modification of a domestic composter

Food waste collection is accessible to everyone! Contact us here to obtain your green bin and use it in addition to your domestic composter. The green bin will allow you to sustainably dispose of animal products (dairy products, meat, bones) that do not go in your domestic composter.

Shorter showers and the use of low-flow shower heads are methods that allow you to save water and energy. Bidets can reduce the amount of toilet paper used (a product that requires a lot of water to manufacture). Even better, use your bidet along with reusable toilet paper, which is eligible in the zero waste product category of the City’s green grants.

Eligible products

  • WaterSense certified shower head, or a shower head that flows less than 7.6 liters per 2 gallons per minute (lpm/gpm)
  • shower sand timer (maximum 5 minutes)
  • bidet: toilet, handheld, bidet seat, or accessory

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • shower heads with a flow that exceeds 7.6 liters per 2 gallons per minute
  • shower timers that exceed 5 minutes

We require a product sheet or description, or a photo of the packaging, indicating the duration of the shower timer, or the WaterSense certification as well as the maximum flow rate of the shower head.

Collecting rainwater allows you to water your plants and lawn, or even for wash your car, with chlorine-free water. Using rainwater allows you to reduce your use of drinking water.

Eligible products

  • plastic or wood rain barrel

*Note: Any recipient containing water is a potential danger to young children and wildlife. Ensure the cover of your rain barrel is in place and securely fastened at all times.

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • the purchase of materials or accessories for the fabrication, repair or modification of a rain barrel

Using reusable diapers allows to significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, and greatly reduces that amount of waste a household produces on a daily basis.

Eligible products

  • regular diapers: flat, pocketed, preformed, AI123-all-in-one/two/three, for swimming
  • reusable training underpants
  • diaper liners, inserts and covers
  • fasteners and fastening devices for flat diapers
  • waterproof transport bag
  • reusable nursing pads

Specific conditions

One (1) application per child, per address, per year. Individuals with multiple children or twins living under the same roof may submit one (1) application per child. The child must be under 5 years old.

The grants does not cover:

  • the purchase of materials to make one’s own products

  • birth certificate or act of birth
  • the child’s health insurance card
  • the child’s hospital card

These reusable alternatives to disposable personal hygiene products make it possible to significantly reduce the amount of waste we produce. In the long term, they also help you save money.

Eligible products

Eligible products include reusable menstrual or incontinence products only:

  • pads and panty liners
  • removable inserts and pads
  • underwear (all types) or swimming bottoms
  • menstrual cups and discs
  • sponges
  • tampon or menstrual cup applicators
  • adult diapers
  • waterproof carrying pouches

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • the purchase of material to produce your own products
  • cleaning products

Grant amount
after taxes

  • 50% up to a total reimbursement of $100

Use mulching blades on your grass and fallen leaves, and allow them to mulch your lawn. They will decompose in 48 hours and produce a natural fertilizer that will help nourish your lawn while reducing the use of paper bags.

Eligible products

  • electric mower, corded or with battery
  • manual reel mower
  • mulching blades (3-in-1, all-purpose) for electric, manual or gasoline mower or tractor, including adapters
  • electric or battery-powered trimmers
  • electric or battery-powered hedge trimmer

Specific conditions

The blades of the device must be able to shred (mulching, 3-in-1, all-purpose).

The grant does not cover:

  • any gas-powered, 2-in-1, or standard blade tractor, mower, or other equipment

Bins on wheels make it easier to transport household garbage street side or lane side.

Eligible products

  • wheeled garbage bin, black or grey, with European grip, with a capacity of 120, 240 or 360 litres

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • repair parts
  • any bin that differs from the product described above: round bins, metal bins, bins of any colour other than black or grey, bins with an American grip, etc

Wildlife installations can promote wildlife biodiversity and increase pollination of neighbouring plants

  • insect hotel (including those for bees)
  • bat house

The grant does not cover:

  • feeders
  • the purchase of materials for the fabrication, repair or modification of wildlife installations

Disposable and single-use products are often used for a short time, but can take hundreds of years to decompose, harming the environment and wildlife in the process. Opting for reusable products reduces waste at the source!

  • beeswax cling film, as well as fabric or silicone bowl covers
  • reusable paper towels, toilet paper and tissues

  • snack pouches with cap for sauces, yogurts and more
  • reusable bags for fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, snacks and more
  • reusable freezer bags
  • reusable straws and travel utensil kits
  • bamboo toothbrushes
  • reusable cotton swabs
  • reusable makeup remover pads and cloths

Specific conditions

The grant does not cover:

  • the purchase of materials for making your own products
  • tea infusers integrated into cups or pitchers
  • reusable grocery and shopping bags
  • camping utensil kits
