Westmount has a variety of interesting, distinct and involved community groups that reflect the diversity and energy of its residents. If you are looking to practice a hobby like gardening, to get involved in volunteer work, or to learn more about local history and politics, chances are that you will find an organisation that shares your interests. GRANTS FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN WESTMOUNT
The City of Westmount offers a grant programme to support non-profit organizations that provide services that are not otherwise available to the community. The programme aims to support the associations and organizations in the community which contribute to the quality of life of residents. The City offers two types of grants – supporting grants, and once-only grants. Applications are accepted annually in November and grants are awarded at the discretion of a committee.
HOW TO MAKE A GRANT REQUEST
All applications must be submitted no later than November 30.
Before submitting your request, make sure you have read the Policy statement on grants for non-profit organizations.
- It is possible to save a partially filled form and complete it at another time.
- If you require more space on the application form, additional pages may be added to the request.
- Incomplete or late requests may be refused.

Working closely with the community, CARREFOUR JEUNESSE-EMPLOI MONTREAL CENTRE-VILLE helps youth aged 16 to 35, located temporarily or permanently in downtown Montreal (including Westmount). We provide them with motivation and support in their education, professional, creative and entrepreneurial projects to enable them to access the job market in Montreal and elsewhere.
Our multi-disciplinary team believes in young people’s potential and drive – and we strive to foster their self-reliance. Working in the fast-paced environment of the downtown core, our team provides a high level of professionalism and commitment on a daily basis.

Centre Greene is as an independent, not-for-profit, community organization dedicated to providing quality recreational, social, and cultural services to the community at large regardless of gender, age, race, ethnic group, ability, or socioeconomic status.
Since 1989, Centre Greene has operated as a non-profit charitable organization offering community recreation programs, affordable rental spaces, and sliding scale discounts for low-income families.

This not-for-profit, non-denominational organization has been serving seniors since 1972. Located at 4695 De Maisonneuve Boulevard W., it is open year-round, Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and encourages the active involvement of seniors in a variety of programmes.
Contactivity offers Westmount seniors a variety of activities and programmes, including twice-weekly community meals, courses ranging from Tai Chi to history, and everything in-between, day trips, restaurant outings, arts and crafts, bridge and chess groups, and watercolouring sessions. It also offers a range of home-support services, such as assistance with grocery shopping, accompaniment to medical appointments, a shared taxi service for seniors with poor mobility, as well as a volunteer-run daily telephone check-in service for those who live alone. Information and referrals are also provided on different senior-related topics. Annual membership is $10.

Dramatis Personae, Westmount’s Community Theatre, meets from 8 to 10 p.m. on Monday evenings in Victoria Hall, under the direction of Jacqueline van de Geer.
The group puts on two shows each year. The fall show features a number of short plays intended as a workshop presentation. The spring show is a full-length play. We are looking for enthusiastic people who love theatre – actors, as well as other creative people who want to be involved in production, publicity and stage management. Experience is not necessary.

Organized by the Friends of the Westmount Public Library. All proceeds from the sale go towards the purchase of new materials for the library.

This non-profit group was established in February 2000.
The members are volunteers who offer to contribute their time, skills, experience and energy to the Library. Their purpose is to stimulate interest in the Library’s resources and facilities and to raise funds to improve the Library’s collections and services.

Girl Guides of Canada offers programmes that provide opportunities for fun, friendship, adventure, personal and leadership development for girls ranging from five to 17 years of age. Leaders 18 and over have opportunities for training, personal growth and travel.

“Open Gate” is a weekly seniors’ day program offered by the Leisure Institute of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim. Every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., participants take part in a variety of activities including bridge, sing-alongs, dancing, art, exercise classes, lunch bingo and lively discussions of current events.
The Montreal Welsh Male Choir has a present membership of about 25 members. The choir has warmed the hearts of hundreds of Quebecers during their Christmas and Spring concerts. It is also proud to have performed for annual events such as Remembrance day activities at the Saint Anne de Bellevue Veterans Hospital and the annual St David’s Ball, held to celebrate St. David’s day. The choir also sings the National Anthem at sporting and community events. While most events are local ones the choir has also been present for national and international celebrations of Welsh vocal music including those in Britain and more recently in the United States where we were part a 400 male voice choir featuring baritone Bryn Terfel at the world renowned Carnegie Hall.
The choir’s annual repertoire is focused on two seasons:
Winter Concerts. In the past the choir has performed three or four major concerts each Christmas season focusing on traditional music, and two or more smaller events at Senior’s Residences.
Spring Concerts. Normally two major concerts are performed in May/June to celebrate the arrival of the earth’s rebirth.
In addition to regular events the choir responds to special community requests including singing the national anthem at sports games, celebrating the life of departed member of our community and joining with Choral Festivals. Also, as previously noted, major tours are periodically planned so as to sing with other male choirs. Visiting choirs frequently come from other provinces or the United States.

Scouts Canada offers fun and exciting outdoor adventure for boys, girls and youth from age 5 to 26. The Scout programme emphasizes having fun while learning new skills. Crafts, games, music and the outdoors are just some of the activities that are organised on a weekly basis. The Scout programme also helps youth age 18-26 to expand their leadership skills with the opportunity to camp, travel and meet with Scout groups from around the world.

The St. John Ambulance, Division 178, is a volunteer-based unit that trains twice a month in Westmount. Its mandate is to assist the City by providing first aid services during major events, emergencies and/or other incidents when required.

Special message from the new Westmount Dog Owners Association
You are invited to join the Westmount Dog Owners Association (WDOA). We are re-activating the WDOA to give dog owners a greater voice in the public life of Westmount. The City Council has recommended the re-establishment of this association.
Why is this important?
Dog owners represent an important constituency in Westmount, and contribute greatly to the vibrancy, connectivity, and well-being of our city. There are over 900 dog licenses issued annually in Westmount, but currently there is no channel for dog owners and their pets to have their interests represented in an organized way. The WDOA is being re-established to achieve the following objectives :
- To encourage responsible dog ownership in Westmount;
- To keep dog owners informed of important issues that might affect them and their pets;
- To speak with a unified voice on behalf of the dog owner community on matters of public policy (e.g. the number and locations of dog runs in the city and potential access restrictions at Summit Woods).
What can you do?

The Westmount Horticultural Society is a non-profit association, which fosters, studies, and encourages horticulture. Anyone with an interest in plants and gardening is welcome.
Monthly meetings feature guest speakers. Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month (with the exception of July and August), in the Westmount room of the Westmount Public Library. Members also have the opportunity to participate in field trips, community activities, as well as occasional workshops.
An annual membership may be purchased at the door prior to any meeting. Alternatively, it is possible to attend meetings by paying a guest fee. Membership is not restricted to Westmount residents.

Westmount Initiative for Peace (WIP), founded in 1985, is a community-based peace group concerned with peace and disarmament issues in general, and Canada’s role in particular. Its activities consist of public education and political lobbying.

The WMA, founded in 1908, is a volunteer organization concerned with the promotion of good, responsive and respectful local government. The Westmount Quilters Guild was founded in January 2003 to promote interest in quilting by providing good fellowship among quilters and quilt lovers.
The Guild meets every Tuesday evening throughout the year except July and August at Victoria Hall, beginning at 7 p.m. Members are encouraged to develop and improve their individual quilting expertise through participation and by sharing their skills and resources in an open, fun-filled atmosphere. The Guild welcomes new members, both novice and experienced. Simply come to one of the weekly meetings to find out whether you would like to join.

Founded in 1876 and currently the oldest active rugby club in North America, the Westmount Rugby Club is looking for new players. A training programme is available for players without experience. Practices take place Tuesday and Thursday evening and Saturday morning at King George Park.

Toastmasters International is the leading organization devoted to the improvement and development of individual communication and leadership skills. Guests are most welcome at Toastmaster meetings, so come and visit us. We meet every Tuesday, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Victoria Hall during the year.
If you do not find what you are looking for, however, you might consider starting up your own group and organizing unique activities. The City can offer some support, such as access to municipal facilities, to make it a reality.
