ASD Social Sensory Discovery: new program offered by Sports & Recreation

In January 2019, the Sports and Recreation Department will offer, for the first time, an ASD Social Sensory Discovery Program, created by local resident Isabelle Toussaint, who saw a need for this type of programming in Westmount. She is fitness and yoga certified.

Register online as spaces are limited by searching the catalogue for ASD. For more information, contact Claude Danis, programme and community services coordinator at 514 989-5393.

The ASD Social Sensory Discovery Program is a program providing a variety of stimulating extra curricular activities in a welcoming, fun and adapted environment for primary school aged children living with ASD in the Westmount community. Participants need to be accompanied by a caregiver for the duration of the sessions to ensure safety, maximize participation in activities, and promote meaningful social interactions.

The program curriculum includes:

  • Gross motor activities: running skills, obstacle courses, dance, and yoga
  • Fine motor activities: arts and crafts, Lego and STEM activities (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics)
  • Social activities: Circle time (themed discussions) and active social skills games.
