Assistant Superintendent – Horticulture & Arboriculture
Purpose of position
Under the responsibility of the Director of Public Works, the incumbent manages the operational activities involving the maintenance of the City’s horticultural, arboricultural, and greenhouse features. Within this context, the incumbent must plan, organize, and control various activities related to inspecting, protecting, and preserving plants, planting and replacing trees, and monitoring the use of pesticides, and must also develop a systematic pruning program. The incumbent must ensure that the work is done, the materials and equipment inventories are updated, and written safety procedures are in place and followed by the employees.
In addition, the incumbent must supervise contractors and participate with his or her superior in carrying out various special projects by providing the required expertise in terms of operations and the maintenance of the facilities.
Also, the incumbent must manage his or her unit’s human, financial, and material resources.
Qualifications
- Diploma of Collegial Studies, with specialization in Ornamental Horticulture Landscaping and Marketing or any other relevant field
- Valid driver’s license (class 5)
- Valid worksite safety card (ASP)
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience, including at least two (2) years in management or team coordination that allowed the incumbent to become familiar with the responsibilities of the position.
Example of tasks
- Planning, organizing, managing, and monitoring operational activities and horticultural and arboricultural maintenance work, and evaluating needs in terms of materials and products.
- Designing tree planting, transplanting, maintenance, pruning, and cutting projects, and drafting horticultural and arboricultural work specifications.
- Keeping registries of tree species and pesticide types in compliance with administrative and legal procedures.
- Developing a systematic tree pruning program and ensuring its implementation.
- Defining and controlling the operations required to properly maintain lawns, such as weed control, fertilizer application, and land surfacing.
