Purpose of position

Reporting to the Division Head, Parks and Greens Spaces in the Public Works Department, the incumbent plans and supports various activities related to urban forestry and is responsible for developing the city's tree policy and establishing, in collaboration with the supervisor, master plans for the development of sites of interest such as Summit Woods, King George Park and Westmount Park. The incumbent acts as a resource person for tree-related assessments, regulations, and programs.

He/she is also responsible for holding various calls for tenders for maintenance work and managing the resulting contracts. He/she is also responsible for coordinating in-house jobs with the Parks Superintendent and participates with the superior in the realization of various special projects by providing the necessary expertise.

Qualifications

  • Hold a bachelor's degree appropriate to the position, i.e. forest engineering, forest management and environment, or equivalent.
  • Be a member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs forestiers du Québec.
  • Hold a valid driver's license (class 5).

Experience

  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience relevant to the position.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Participates, with his or her supervisor, in determining the unit’s orientations, objectives and priorities based on the department’s mission.
  2. Participates in the development and drafting of tree policy and urban forestry master plans for the various sites to be developed.
  3. Initiates and monitors maintenance programs and urban forestry inventory.
  4. Collaborates in identifying the City’s needs in terms of urban forestry planning and preservation.
  5. Receives requests and complaints from citizens, analyzes requests, documents responses, seeks appropriate solutions and formulates recommendations.
  6. Coordinates forest capital management and information on invasive species issues.

Essential Knowledge

  • Of terms and methods of urban arboriculture;
  • Of current regulations and standards concerning plants and the use of pesticides;
  • Of computer software appropriate to the position (Word, Excel, ArcGIS, etc.);
  • Of both spoken and written languages (French, English).
