Purpose of position

Under the responsibility of the Superintendent of Aerial and Underground Distribution, the incumbent manages the operational activities of the unit in charge of construction, repair, and daily maintenance projects for the aerial and underground power distribution grid. The incumbent helps manage the maintenance and upgrading of traffic signals and street lighting.

Within this context, the incumbent must plan, organize, and control the activities related to the operation and maintenance of the aerial and underground power distribution grid infrastructure and all municipal electrical equipment, such as: lighting and traffic control. The incumbent must ensure that the work is done, the materials and equipment inventories are updated, and written safety procedures are in place and followed by the employees.

In addition, the incumbent must supervise contractors and participate with his or her superior in carrying out different special projects by providing the required expertise in terms of the operations and maintenance of the power grid and infrastructure. He/She must be available to respond to emergencies that arise and intervene to maintain the distribution, lighting and signaling network.

The incumbent must also manage the unit’s human, financial, and material resources.

Qualifications

  • Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) in either Electrical Engineering or Electricity, or be a master electrician;
  • Licence from the Ordre des techniciens professionnels (TP) or the Régie du bâtiment.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience, including at least two (2) years in team management or coordination that allowed the incumbent to become familiar with the responsibilities of the position such as : Power grid operation; Construction, repair, and maintenance projects on the aerial and underground distribution grid; Installation and maintenance projects of electrical equipment for lighting and traffic lights.

Main Responsabilities

  1. Determining, with his or her superior, the unit’s orientations, objectives, and priorities based on the Department’s mission;
  2. Planning, organizing, heading, and controlling activities related to the operation and maintenance of the aerial and underground power distribution infrastructure;
  3. Ensuring the proper functioning of the power grid, the installation and maintenance of equipment on the street lighting and traffic signal network;
  4. Ensuring that the procedures to restore power quickly, efficiently, and safely are respected, updating them, and informing the staff under his or her authority of their contents;
  5. Participating, upon his or her superior’s request, in special projects and providing technical expertise related to the operation and maintenance of municipal infrastructure;
  6. Supervising subcontractors and ensuring the compliance and quality of their work.

Job Profile

Knowledge

  • Electrical distribution equipment such as transformers, disconnectors, switches, cables, fuses, electrical equipment for lighting and control, etc.
  • Windows software programs (Word, Excel, MS Project, etc.);
  • Both languages (French, English), spoken and written.
